Hedon Primary School

PSHCE

In PSHE, children learn about how they are growing and changing as individuals and as members of their family, school and community.

At Hedon we aim to enable children to explore their feelings and learn how to share and respect the feelings of other people as they grow and mature. We are keen to instill a sense of self confidence in all of our children and to help them to take responsibility for themselves and become more independent along the way. At the upper end of the school, we want to prepare them for their transfer to secondary school with support, care and encouragement.

PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw scheme of learning, which includes statutory Relationships and Health Education (England), in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work. This comprehensive Programme gives children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others. A wide variety of teaching and learning styles are used within PSHE lessons, with an emphasis on interactive learning with the teacher as a facilitator.

Lessons have a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, the Jigsaw resources allow teachers at Spring Cottage to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. PSHCE lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

The emotional environment across the school helps children to develop the confidence to ask questions, challenge the information they are offered, draw on their own experience, express their views and opinions and put what they have learned into practice in their own lives.

Our PSHE programme is just part of what we do to help each child develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to succeed in life. The curriculum in PSHE links with all aspects of school life and pastoral approaches we use, ensuring for our children that making the responsible choice is the easy choice.
